Mental Health & Psychosocial Wellbeing: Building Stronger Communities

Mental health is an essential part of individual, family and community wellbeing. Yet many communities continue to face challenges such as limited mental health awareness, stigma and discrimination, fear of seeking help, inadequate access to appropriate services and weak referral pathways.

CHAD is committed to promoting mental health awareness, psychosocial wellbeing, stigma reduction and stronger connections to appropriate support services. Its community-centred approach recognizes that mental health is not only a clinical issue—it is also influenced by families, schools, livelihoods, relationships, social environments and wider community conditions.

Supporting Mental Health at Community Level

CHAD promotes accessible mental health information through community awareness sessions, health education, community dialogues, youth engagement and advocacy. The organization also works to reduce misconceptions and stigma by encouraging respectful conversations that promote understanding, acceptance and support.

Young people are an important focus of this work. CHAD creates opportunities for youth to participate in discussions around mental wellbeing while connecting mental health with areas such as sexual and reproductive health, HIV prevention, menstrual health, education, leadership and youth empowerment.

A Community-Based Approach

CHAD's approach is built around six key steps:

Listen → Create Awareness → Reduce Stigma → Identify → Connect → Learn

This approach encourages communities to understand their own needs, identify concerns early, create supportive environments and connect people who require additional assistance with qualified professionals and appropriate services.

Mental Health and Wider Community Challenges

Mental wellbeing can be affected by poverty, economic insecurity, gender-based challenges, climate change, displacement, food insecurity, limited youth opportunities and sexual and reproductive health concerns. CHAD therefore seeks to integrate mental health considerations into broader community development programmes where appropriate.

The organization also promotes research and learning in areas including youth mental health, community mental health, stigma, climate change and mental wellbeing, livelihoods, SRHR, gender, community resilience and digital health information.

Working Together

CHAD recognizes that meaningful progress requires collaboration among communities, young people, families, community health actors, mental health professionals, health facilities, county health departments, schools, universities, civil society organizations, foundations and development partners.

Through partnerships, awareness, research, capacity building and community implementation, CHAD aims to contribute to more accessible and responsive mental health support.

Mental health is everyone's concern. By working together, we can build communities where mental health is understood, supported and valued.
